Our story · Chennai

A designer’s eye.
A baker’s hands.

14 years of baking. 10 years of Hew & Frost.

It began with a cake, a love for making things, and a curiosity about where baking could take me.

01 / A different kind of making

From fabric
to frosting.

I trained in textile design at NIFT. Colour, texture, proportion, pattern and craft were how I understood the world. Baking became another way to work with all of those things — except now, what I made could be shared, eaten and remembered.

Fourteen years on, it is still an exploration. Elaborate celebration cakes and wedding commissions sit alongside brownies, cookies, savouries and small-batch bakes we simply feel like making.

A flavour we remember. An ingredient we want to try. An idea that refuses to leave us alone. That curiosity is what shapes the menu.

Two words. One way of making.

Hew
To shape something by hand.
Frost
The quiet finishing touch.

Considered, but never precious. There is room for play, imperfection, nostalgia and surprise. And underneath it all, the food has to be good.

02 / Meet the baker

Mridula
Ganesan

Baker, designer and perpetual maker of things.

I still look at food the way I look at design: the colour of a fruit, the texture of a crumb, the way something sits on a plate. But some of my favourite things to make have nothing to do with looking perfect.

They remind you of somewhere. A flavour from home. Something you ate growing up. A combination that makes you think, “I haven’t had this in years.”

“I always find joy in making something that becomes part of someone’s celebration.”

Somewhere between the familiar and the unexpected, the designed and the handmade, is where Hew & Frost feels most like itself.

03 / Custom cakes

Nothing off the shelf.
Everything starts with you.

  1. 01

    First, we listen.

Your celebration, your outfits, a favourite flower, a family story. The little details help us find a direction that feels like you.

  2. 02

    Then, we draw.

We explore shape, colour and texture in a couple of sketches. We design from scratch, rather than working from a catalogue.

  3. 03

    And then, we taste.

Ask us about sample boxes to explore flavours for your celebration. A beautiful cake still needs to be a very good cake.

  4. 04

    Made for your moment.

Once the design and flavours are settled, we share a detailed quote. With your order confirmed, we get to work and finish it by hand.
